Living in Colorado ~ National Night Out ~ Have a Block Party
Jul 25th, 2007 by Steve Scheer
National Night Out, founded in 1984, is just around the corner. On August 7th, the foundation encourages people to turn on their porch & garage lights, lock up their homes and get outside and meet your neighbors.
In Douglas County, residents take the opportunity to arrange block parties and I have been to some in the past that have been great. The driving philosophy behind the organization is, since you meet your neighbors, it helps prevent crime.
Perhaps you have recently relocated to Douglas County and want to meet your neighbors. This is a perfect opportunity. Not hearing of an event planned? Plan one yourself. It can be as simple as everyone bringing lawn chairs out front or more involved with food & refreshments organized. Whatever you want. The National Night Out web site has many ideas to help you get started.
The Douglas County Sheriffs office gets involved in these parties as well and is open to visiting them with K-9 units, patrol cars and other great gadgets that particularly interesting to kids. My own children love to see the K-9 dogs and we even had the opportunity to get up close with a fire truck and ambulance at a past event.
