Denver Living & Events ~ National Western Stock Show Kicks Off This Week

by Steve Scheer on January 8, 2008

When I can, I enjoy posting about events in the Denver area that would be particularly interesting for those new or relocating to Denver.  So if you have just moved to Colorado, or perhaps you have just never made time for this annual tradition – I highly encourage you to check out the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo.  I an remember the stock show sine I was a kid growing up in Denver myself.  And once i had kids of my own, it became an annual event for us as well.

National Western Stock ShowThere is something at the stock show for everyone – whether its a rodeo, viewing the animals, seeing a livestock auction or an exhibitors show that interests you – you are sure to find something to interest you.

The first year we went my own kids loved the kids petting zoo and every year since then they have progressed to a new favorite.  There was a year we spent viewing miking cows for what seemed like hours, another year the the Wild West show was declared the favorite, and then there was the year we spent about 2 hours looking at chickens and baby pigs.  One of my favorite memories is my son on a John Deere tractor – I remember how fascinated my son was with this giant machine – we climbed all over it for quite some time.

My own personal favorite is watching the Mutton Bustin'.  I always get a kick out of watching the little one's ride as long as they can.  And in case you don't know what Mutton Bustin' is – a younger child (under 7 years old) rides a sheep as long as they can without falling off.

My wife has always been a fan of the Super Dogs and the Evening with the Dancing Horses

The National Western Stock Show and Rodeo kicks off this weekend, January 12th and runs through January 27th.  Most events are at the National Western Complex, but there are a few other facilities used as well.

The annual parade through downtown is on Tuesday, January 15h at 11:30am along 17th St.  If you are interested in reading more about the history of the National Western Stock Show, click here.
