Living in Denver - The Denver Zoo
May 16th, 2008 by Steve Scheer
If you are considering a move to Denver, one of the things you will want to put on your list of things to do is the Denver Zoo. A trip to the zoo could also be a perfect diversion during a home shopping trip, once you have found your home!
The Denver Zoo is really one of the nicest zoo's I have ever been to - and I am not just saying that because I live here in Denver. It truly is. We have been countless times and there was a period of about 5 years when my kids were a bit younger that we were Zoo members. (Membership at the Denver Zoo is truly a great deal if you plan to visit often!) Now that the kids are a little older we aren't able to get over there quite as often as a membership would enable, but we do still visit a few times a year - and each visit is just as great or even better than the last.
I think that springtime is the perfect time to visit the zoo - the weather is still generally cool and there is a pretty good chance that you will be able to see some zoo babies on a spring trip. So far this spring there have been twin Golden Lion Tamarins, born in March and an Eastern Bongo Calf that was born on March 30th. The tamarins are now starting to appear on exhibit and the Bongo calf is sometimes outside with his mother. The zoo is also very busy in the spring with Denver area school field trips - so if you are planning a visit during the week, you are sure to see school groups.
Improvements in the zoo seem to be constant - there is almost always something new each time we are there. Predator Ridge is one of the newer larger areas in the zoo and I can't wait to see some of the changes in store for the future. I hear one of the big changes on the way is to re-do the elephants' home in an area that will be called Asian Tropics.
The pictures here from around the zoo were taken recently, on a spring day, while I was in the area between appointments.
The Denver Zoo is located on 23rd Avenue off of both York Street or Colorado Blvd. - next to City Park.
