Here we are in practically mid May.
As I type this its been pouring an icy rain here in Highlands Ranch for about 3 hours and it sounds like its going to be turning to snow shortly with a potential for some significant accumulation (although I am personally hoping we stay with the rain).
If you are moving to Denver or have recently moved to Denver, you are
probably thinking – what is this???
I want to assure you, this is not normal. At least in the possible quantities being discussed or the late date. Go ahead over to any of the news websites and you will see a much nicer weekend ahead.
Is it abnormal to get snow in May in Colorado? Abnormal, no. A possible forecast for as much as they are saying – yes, that is somewhat unusual. Generally speaking, the rule of thumb has been, wait to plant until after Mother’s Day. For those that spent hours in Home Depot & their gardens this weekend, I am thinking they are all impatiently waiting for the morning to see what the damage is. In fact it was only a small handful of weeks ago that we had another strong quick spring Denver storm. And that one cleared out quickly as well.
Colorado is known for its “300 Days of Sunshine”.
That is just one of the things I love about living in Denver. These crazy spring storms, which often wind up being all rain for the city & Denver suburbs, do happen, but it will gone as quick as it rolled on in.
As I finish writing this post on this crazy Denver spring weather, the rain has turned to hail, is rattling the windows and there is lightening and the thunder has shook the house a few times. In fact, I think the hail is now turning to snow, so that would make it “thundersnow”.
By Friday I suspect I will be drinking my coffee on the deck while this Springtime in the Rockies storm is just a memory.
And let’s hope I am not posting a picture like this in the morning!

It’s funny, I have never been to Denver, but I absolutely love it. A good 15 of my friends have moved there within the past year alone, and they were all complaining about the snow today! I’m in Syracuse NY which just had some snowfall the other day, so I’m no stranger to crazy weather. I work for a company called Alliance Relocation, and we relocate people and companies all over and often have to tell people that in some places, like Denver, to enjoy the uniqueness of something like snow in May!
Thanks for stopping by Jenn, I hope its warming up for you in Syracuse. It sounds like we are going to get a tad more snow here tonight before we are back on track for spring this weekend.
