Day 7 Red Rocks Amphitheatre

by Steve Scheer on July 19, 2010

Day 7, Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Park, Morrison CO

Technically Red Rocks is not in the south Denver suburbs, but for Day 7 of 365 Things to DO in the South Denver Suburbs, that is where I am taking you – so we could call it a ROADTRIP – but it is not that far.  And we could call it a DAYTRIP if you are throwing in a hike, but you also may be going for an evening convert or outdoor movie.  So it can be really a jack of all trades trip -and should be.  If you live in Colorado and have not been to Red Rocks – just go.  And if you are moving to Denver, this is what you have in store for you.

The Music

Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Park is nestled at the base of the foothills of The Rocky Mountains in Morrison, Colorado.  The famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre is open air and was formed naturally by the surrounding rock formations.  There are too many works to describe it but awesome and jaw dropping come to mind.  Two main rock formations surround the amphitheatre that provide a natural sound system that is fairly amazing.  Coupled with the natural beauty, it is fair to say that artists WANT to perform here at Red Rocks.

The Park

Red Rocks is also home to The Ship Rock Grill which hosts a wonderful Sunday brunch – in fact the video that I have posted here was recorded after such a brunch on Mother’s Day this year.  There are also hiking and biking trails – the main trail – “The Trading Post” is a 1.4 mile loop and is very popular.  The biking trail leads into Jefferson County Parks trails.  Working out at Red Rocks is not for the faint of heart but you will see many people doing it.  With the increased altitude and rows and rows of benches and stairs, it is a popular destination to train in the beautiful Colorado outdoors.  You will see some folks training in the video, walkers, bench climbers and you will even see some push-ups at the end.  It is also not unusual for someone to just take place on the stage during the day and play their instrument – as you will hear the drums on the tape.

Just go

When you go, it is very worth a trip into the Visitor Center as the hallways leading to The Sip Rock grill are lined with plaques & photos of who has played.  Even promotional posters are around, pay attention to the ticket price on them – remembering the times of concerts tickets at $22.50 a pop will make your jaw drop.
