Day 47 | Attend a Colorado Rapid’s Home Game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park | Commerce City

Day 47 will take you out of the south Denver suburbs and bring you clear to the other side of Denver – to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, home of the Colorado Rapids.

If you have been reading this blog for a while or know me personally,  you know I have one child really involved in soccer. One thing we had never done prior to this year is attend a Major League Colorado Rapids game. I went to a game earlier this season and will be attending tonight as well as the Rapids take on the Houston Dynamo.  I enjoyed myself at the first game I attended – it was something different, faster & more physical than I expected and really very entertaining.

Everyone that has lived in the Denver area for any amount of time knows that Denver is a huge sports city.  And if you are relocating to Denver, you will have that to look forward to.  But I would say that the interest has been always more focused in the big 4 -  Broncos, Nuggets, Avs and Rockies.  There also seems to be a growing interest in lacrosse and recently it does seem that interest in soccer has grown.  Of course that has has something to do with the World Cup this summer.  Very different in person that watching it on tv.  My daughter’s team will be attending together this evening, so it is a great bonding experience for them and fun for the parents too!

Even though this season started back in the spring there are still almost 2 months of games left on the schedule, with 6 home games at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.

The stadium is located in Commerce City – chances are you will plan on taking the Quebec exit form I70, but take a peak at the alternate routes if you will be coming via I70 east from Denver.  Traffic in that area on I70 can get quite backed up and I generally do pop off the highway an exit or two early and head to Dick’s stadium through the side streets.

Speaking of soccer and a mention of the World Cup, the U.S. is attempting to bid on the 2018 / 2022 World Cup with an interest in Denver as a host city. I have posted elsewhere about this before but you can also click here to sign the petition to express your support of this bid.

Day 11 – Community Festivals: Arapahoe County Fair and Buffalo Bill Days in Golden

On Day 11 of 365 Things to Do in South Denver Suburbs, I suggest you attend a community festival – and there are at least 2 great ones going on right now.  Both the Arapahoe County Fair in Aurora and Buffalo Bill Days in Golden are in full swing this weekend.

Arapahoe County Fair

The Arapahoe County Fair is a family friendly tradition and began earlier the week on 7/21 and runs through Sunday, 7/25.  It is a typical county fair in style but is well worth the trip to attend.  The theme this year is Barnyard Boogie and you can see why if you take a look at the entertainment line-up.  The Arapahoe County Fair is filled with food, carnival rides, animals, demonstrations, rodeos,  music and has a full schedule of events all weekend long.  The fair is located at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds at 25690 E Quincy Ave, Aurora, CO.  The fair has extended hours this weekend starting today – from 11:00 am – 9:00 pm.

Buffalo Bill Days

Buffalo Bill Days in downtown historic Golden CO is well worth a visit as well.  This is actually one of my favorite events of the year and I plan on heading over to Golden this weekend again as well.  It is a weekend long event as well that is in full swing that celebrates the once trail rides up to Buffalo Bill’s grave at the top of Lookout Mountain.  Your whole family can get a taste of the Wild West!  There area a variety of events all weekend long including today, but to me, Saturday and Sunday are the best of the days to attend.

On Saturday morning you could start the day with the 10am parade, and then head over to Parfet Park at 10th and Washington where there will be music, rides, Western events, food and more. Many of the events will continue down a few blocks to the downtown areas as well.  Some of the highlights on Sunday include a car show, Muttin Bustin’ and much more.

Its a full weekend for those of us in the Denver area and suburbs.  Whether you have lived in the Denver suburbs for years or have recently relocated to the Denver area – these are traditions you will enjoy.  Are there other local festival this weekend to share?

When changes occur in the Denver suburbs that I serve, I like to keep you up to date.  And of course, we here about foreclosures almost every day now in the news, here is a piece of news that will affect properties in Aurora that may be going down the foreclosure path.

Starting April 4, 2009 the city of Aurora Colorado began requiring financial institutions to register properties within the city that are abandoned, foreclosed or owned by financial institutions.

This new ordinance is established in part to provide Neighborhood Services staff with contact and ownership information.

The required registration will hold the foreclosing financial institution or property owner responsible for:

Maintaining properties in good repair according to City code

Ensuring properties are secured

Performing regular inspections of properties to assure compliance with City codes

The goal of the new ordinance is to lessen the impact of vacant and abandoned properties in the City and help stabilize property values.

Snow?

No, its June.  (Which doesn't mean it can't snow in Colorado in June.  But it is not snow).

Dust from your camera? 

No, although it may look like it.

I live in Highlands Ranch near the High Line Canal.

The High Line Canal runs through the area with a wonderful bike trail along it.  It is lined with Cottonwood Trees.  Every year, in early June for about 10 – 14 days the seedlings from the Cottonwood trees blow throughout the area. 

It almost looks like its snowing in June at times if the wind is strong enough.

Summer is here.
