Day 14 | Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply in Littleton CO

On Day 14 of 365 Things To Do in The Denver Suburbs, I am heading over to Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply in Littleton, CO.

Murdoch’s is very close to my Highlands Ranch home, but it is on the other side of Santa Fe Drive, so technically it is in Littleton and not Highlands Ranch.  And while those that live on Denver horse property are probably very familiar with Murdoch’s, others may not be – but truly there is something for everyone at Murdoch’s.

Murdoch’s is a western wearer’s dream come true. If you have any occasion for some styling boots, cowboy hats, bandannas or any other western apparel, there is no doubt you will find it here.  And for those that have horse property or other ranch type land or livestock here in the Denver area, pretty much anything you may need is here at Murdochs.  And if you need jeans, for sure they have them.

One of my kid’s favorite time to visit Murdoch’s is in the spring when the chicks come in. They love to see the chick boxes (I am sure there is a proper word for that but I do not know what it is).  Of course every year they beg to bring home a chick, but its not happening here.

They also have a large selection of pet food that many of us that don’t live on acreage land in the Denver area, can still use. I have been known to shop here for both dog and cat food and doggy treats from time to time.  Tully loves them.

When I do bring my kids to Murdoch’s they make a bee-line right to the candy shelf. There are rows of candy lined up on bags and generally we will leave with a bag of gummy worms or something of the sort.

The best part of Murdoch’s is that the staff is very friendly and helpful but not over bearing. Everyone checking out has always been very friendly and personable.  Its a bit like a small town feel that you don’t see often enough anymore.  I think many Denver businesses could learn a lesson or two from the staff at Murdoch’s in Littleton.

If you have plans to attend the upcoming festivities for Littleton’s Western Welcome Week and plan on dressing the part, you should definitely head over to Murdoch’s – you will find exactly what you are looking for.  They are located on Santa Fe Drive at Highlands Ranch Parkway.

Day 9 Cherry Creek North Sidewalk Sale, Denver CO

Today on Day 9 of 365 Things to Do in South Denver Suburbs – it is an out of the Suburbs day as we are going to head into the Denver neighborhood of Cherry Creek North for the annual Sidewalk Sale.

Technically the sale does not begin until tomorrow 7/22/10 – however this is one you will want to be sure you are heading out the door on time.  Additionally, it is not uncommon at all for many of the shops in Cherry Creek North to begin the sale early.  Some offer regular customer early days and other similar type early programs, but by tomorrow the sale will be in full swing for everyone participating.  The Sidewalk sale wraps up on 7/25 this year.

Shopping

The annual event has been occurring in Cherry Creek North for 40 years, and if you have shopping in mind, it is THE chance to score stellar deals in the 16 block shopping district.  While many of the shops are clothing and fashion – if you have recently relocated to the Denver metro area or have moved within Denver or the suburbs – you may be in need of home furnishings or decor.  This certainly could be your chance to do that at stores such as Cherry Creek Oriental Rugs, Ten Thousand Villages, Interior Intuitions, Fast Frame, Cherry Creek Framing, Brass Bed, Shaver – Ramsey, Firefly Furnishings, Design Textures, and many more.

Food

And if shopping isn’t your thing but want to just get out and enjoy the atmosphere – many of the restaurants in Cherry Creek North will be having specials as well during the sale on items such as appetizers and drinks.  And it appears that Whole Foods is even participating.  Some of the restaurants do require a shopping receipt from the sale for food & drink specials so that is something to consider.

Details

There is a list of participating stores, boutiques and restaurants however – don’t be limited by this list.  Generally speaking, you will see many more businesses in the area participates in some way, so I would venture to say that the list is not complete, at least right now as I am looking at it.

Cherry Creek North is located on the north side of the Cherry Creek Mall on the east side of University and runs from 1st Ave to 3rd Ave on the north side of the Cherry Creek Shopping Center.    Parking is available on the street by meter and there are several garages throughout the area as well.  A few businesses have lots as well, but it can be challenging to find a spot.  If you live near Cherry Creek North or want to make it a day trip, considering riding your bike among the many trail systems in the Denver area to get you to Cherry Creek North – there is ample bike parking throughout the area.  Additionally there are 4 stations for the Bike Sharing program in Cherry Creek North, which gives you even more options.

One of the nice things about living in the Denver suburbs is that it is easy to get into Denver for all kinds of events such as the Cherry Creek North Sidewalk Sale.  Living in the suburbs has its perks, and quick easy trips in and out of Denver are a huge plus.

Denver Suburbs in the press again…

Just a quick post to let you know of yet another media blurb touching on reasons one may want to consider Denver relocation and Douglas County Colorado in particular.

According to CNN Money this month, Douglas County Ranks #4 in the nation as far as Where the Jobs Are – and they specifically make note of Highlands Ranch…  They cite a 56.2% job growth between 2002 and 2009.   Companies mentioned in the CNN article are Avaya, DISH Network and Sprint Nextel, TeleTech and there is a mention of Lockheed / ULA as well.  You can see the whole list here at CNN Money.

On a personal note I loved that the photo used in the article features Highlands Ranch’s Redstone Park – regular readers and those that know me, know this is one of my favorite places that I visit daily and have posted and mentioned it often.

Also in Colorado, Broomfield County is listed as #8 with a 50.1% job growth rate.

There was another recent article in CNN Money that mentioned Colorado areas as Best Places to Live, and Highlands Ranch Colorado was mentioned there as well.

Day 5 – Escape the Denver Heat – Lace Up The Skates At An Ice Arena

Day 5 of 365 Things To Do in South Denver Suburbs isn’t going to be one place, but an idea in general.  Some are looking forward to the 100 degree day we are about to have here in Colorado.  Some are not.  Instead of heading to the neighborhood pool, you can head indoors to the ice arena would beat the heat, for a bit anyway.

Back in 2007, I wrote a piece in the summer during a very hot week about escaping the heat at an ice arena. The landscape has changed a little since then in the Denver ice arena availability -but here are your options. some time.  Here are a few of the places you can do that here in Denver & the South Suburbs.

South Suburban Ice Arena
South Suburban Ice Arena in Centennial is on Vine, just west of University and North of Arapahoe.  It is run by the South Suburban Parks & Recreation for its open skate and has a wide availability of open skate times. They have many lessons available for all ages and abilities and also have a great Learn to Hockey skate program, even for adults.  Their open skate times are generally 90 minutes each and are very easy on the budget whether you live in district or out.  They also have skate rentals available, cheap.

Family Sports Ice Arena
There is also the Family Sports Ice Center in Centennial just south of Arapahoe & Peoria.  Also run by SSPRD there are great options there as well.  This is the location where the Av’s practice, so even though we are in the off season, you never know who you may run into.  The lobby of family sports is a kids arcade and on the property you will also find laser tag, the Sports Dome (indoor turf field for soccer/lacrosse, etc) and the SSPRD golf course & driving range.

DU – Joy Burns Arena
On the south side of Denver, there is the University of Denver at Joy Burns Arena located at University just south of I25.  Home of the DU Pioneers next door at Magness Arena, Joy Burns Arena has a great community for open skating year round.

The Edge
At Foothills – The Edge in Littleton you will find an arena and open skate schedule managed by the Foothills Parks & Rec.  Looking at the schedule, The Edge ice arena definitely has open skate times today, 7/17 in the mid afternoon – when you know it is going to be really hot.  The Edge is on Ward Street in Littleton and sits high on the hill – you can’t miss it.

The Ice Ranch
The Ice Ranch may be the newest facility on the ice arena landscape in Denver & the south suburbs, it is not really new anymore. Located in Littleton just over the Highlands Ranch line, you will be as likely to find a drop-in open hockey time that works for you as an open skate.

If you need a change of pace from the pools from escaping the Denver heat, try skating. And as I said on that first post back in 2007,  you may want to even bring your mittens.

Day 3 – Savory Spice, Littleton CO – 365 Days

Today, on Day 3, I am going to tell you about a place I have actually only been once but I have to say that I benefit from it several times a  week.

Savory Spice is an awesome spice shop in Old Littleton - and there are actually other locations throughout the Denver metro area.   Just as you open the door to Savory Spice Shop all the scents of spices and herbs come rushing at you – its amazing the fresh scent.

The store itself is quaint – all of the spices are lined up in jars throughout the walls – its really cool.

In my house, we have quite a bit of spice blends from Savory Spice and throughout the year, but especially in the summer, we grill all kinds of meals that are made from savory spice blends.  Many of the blends are named after the mountain ranges.  And with names like Mount Evans and Longs Peak – its a great way to make a little Colorado gift basket.   I am certainly no master chef by any means, but I can tell you that whatever they are doing to make those spice blends – they are might tasty.

I also loved finding out that its a local owned business and I found it to be very affordable.   Whether you have lived in the south Denver suburbs for a long time or have just moved to Littleton – if you haven’t been to Savory Spcie Shop, you should.

Check it out in downtown Littleton at 2650 W Main St in old downtown Littleton.
