Summer is here and all the new summer projects have begun. Many are exciting projects for outdoor enthusiasts in Highlands Ranch.

Beginning June 5, 2009 the Highlands Ranch Metro Districts took control of the Spring Gulch Equestrian area from the Colorado State Parks. The HRMD district is making the 105 acre site more accessible to the public by reducing fees and improving the facility which has been used for equestrians for 30 years.  I have been taking daily walks along the Spring Gulch Equestrian area for some time, as it is along the route that I walk my dog.  It will be interesting to see how this develops within Highlands Ranch.

In addition to the equestrian facility improvements, part of this project will add a fishing pier and trail to the Spring Gulch pond located on the west side of Santa Fe Drive. Also, the trailhead access will be put in place directly south of Shea Stadium for the East-West regional trail linking this area to the Lone Tree area through the new BackCountry wilderness area which also opened this weekend.

These newest projects represent the many, many reasons that make Highlands Ranch a wonderful place to live and play. Get out there and enjoy!

Starting April 4, 2009 the city of Aurora Colorado began requiring financial institutions to register properties within the city that are abandoned, foreclosed or owned by financial institutions.

This new ordinance is established in part to provide Neighborhood Services staff with contact and ownership information.

The required registration will hold the foreclosing financial institution or property owner responsible for:

Maintaining properties in good repair according to City code

Ensuring properties are secured

Performing regular inspections of properties to assure compliance with City codes

The goal of the new ordinance is to lessen the impact of vacant and abandoned properties in the City and help stabilize property values.

This store has been near my house in Highlands Ranch for years and for whatever reason I have never been.  Somehow my kids have, they wanted to know if I brought them home candy.  They were all too familiar with the rows of bright bags of candy that are at the front of the store. 

Before today I thought it was only a farm and ranch store, which it has plenty of that. I was surprised to find tools, clothes, gardening supplies and of course, farm and ranch supplies.

I went to Murdoch’s to see if they had dog treats. Boy do they. I found lots of pet supplies, toys and treats! My lab is hard to buy for, he tends to chew right thru even the toughest dog toys. However, I did find one for him at Murdoch’s that I think will work. I even got him some of his favorite pig and sow ears.  By the way, the lady at the checkout told me that if you bring your dog in with you, they get a free pigs ear! What a nice treat.

Murdoch’s even has little turkey chicks for sale. Very cute, I took a picture of them here. If you live on horse property or just larger acreage, Murdoch’s is a very cool place to go get your supplies.  And if you have children like mine who love candy, bring them along, they’ll be in heaven. 

Murdoch’s is close enough to my Highlands Ranch home that I plan on walking there next time through the trails in Highlands Ranch with my dog.  He’ll love to visit.

By the way, my pup has already half destroyed his new indestructible toy!  I think the only toy for him may be a bowling ball.
